I use mythology as imagery.  At the suggestion of Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding, James Lovelock has named his scientific "earth system" theory Gaia, after the pre-classical goddess.

"Gaia theory forces a planetary perspective.  It is the health of the planet that matters, not that of some individual species of organisms" - James Lovelock "The Ages of Gaia" 1988

"The record drawn from the analysis of Antarctic ice cores clearly shows a strong correlation between global temperature, carbon dioxide and methane abundance" - James Lovelock "The Revenge of Gaia" 2006
