Culturenet"A doodle using computer drawing software – printed on special acetate sheet and exposed in sunlight against a photopolymer plate – inked and printed relief on the Sidney Nolan Trust’s press – my first attempt at solar plate – I’m instantly sold on the method and start the long process of learning how to get consistently good results; where to obtain plate supplies; and what "stochastic screens" are – can anyone help?"

Solar plate is a new fine art printmaking method that can achieve most effects possible with traditional intaglio techniques (etching, engraving,  aquatint, mezzotint, etc.) or with lithographic or relief methods. Solar plate avoids the health and safety issues associated with acid etching, solvents and resin dusts. It is, in short, versatile and exciting. So why are so few printmakers in the UK using it? Part of the answer may be simply unfamiliarity. The Sidney Nolan Trust encourages printmakers to explore this new medium by running introductory workshops both at the Trust's premises near Presteigne and at outside venues in the Border Marches region.
