The Sidney Nolan Trust supports a group of artist-printmakers who use
the Trust's printmaking studio and exhibit at Trust exhibitions. There is a modest annual subscription (currently £30 pa) and a daily studio use
charge (£5) towards overheads and the cost of consumables. The Trust
arranges a programme of printmaking courses and workshops and offers members'
discounts on course fees.
In 2011 we welcome another experienced printmaker and book artist from our Australian
partner studio, Warringah
Printmakers near Sydney. Jan Melville - accompanied by her husband, a
watercolour artist - will be with us from 3 -18 September, which includes
Herefordshire Art Week (h.Art). Jan is also a specialist in altered books
and assemblage and will be running workshops on both these topics. To give
you a flavour of what's to come, have a look at Annie Day's account and pictures
of her and Robin Ezra's visit to The Rodd in September 2010.
The major event of 2011 will be our "Steamroller Prints" weekend in
August. The 2009 event was such fun for everyone who took part and for the
hundreds who came to watch. In 2011 we plan an even more ambitious
festival over five days, building on the successes of the inaugural event.
Click here for the artists' brief.
Other highlights of our 2011 programme are that we can, for the first time,
offer workshops in traditional lithography. We are pleased to welcome Gini
Wade back at The Rodd after her two year apprenticeship under Tamarind master
printmaker Paul Croft and now with an MA in printmaking.
London-based wood engraver Peter Brown (see Times "Nature Notes"
illustrations) will be back to run three days on Japanese woodblock.
As if this wasn't enough, Lisa Harding
will lead more of her popular
series of safer etching workshops.
For book artists, we have taken a table at the
Bristol Artist's Book Event on 30 April & 1 May. As mentioned above,
Jan Melville will be running workshops on altered books and assemblage. We
may be able to run some members' days as well.
New Printmakers
and Book Artists welcome :
The Sidney Nolan Trust
welcomes new users of its printmaking studio and new members of the
printmaking and book arts groups. Newcomers who wish to use the print
studio are asked to attend a
half-day health & safety/workshop practice briefing, for which there is
a charge. If you are in any doubt whether
your experience is sufficient or recent enough, then please book on the printmaking
workshops in Eardisley Village Hall and/or the open
access studio
sessions. Contact
us to register interest.
2011 Introductory Printmaking Workshops
in Eardisley Village Hall
- Sunday 13 March, 10.00 - 4.00 - Intaglio Printmaking -
Participants get to
grips with traditional and contemporary methods of making fine art prints,
using a modern portable etching press that is virtually identical to those in
use for many centuries. An opportunity to try fine art printmaking at
affordable cost.
- Saturday 19 March, 10.00 - 4.00 - Intaglio Colour Inking - Follow-on
session to find out how to make intaglio prints in colour, using techniques
with wonderful names "à la poupée", "chine collé",
"jigsaw" & "multi-plate".
- Sunday 27 March, 10.00 - 4.00 - Collagraph Printmaking -
Collagraph is a
modern printmaking technique that is wonderfully flexible and almost
infinitely expressive. Those with little or no printmaking training can
create, in a few hours, effects similar to those which printmakers
traditionally slaved for weeks or months to achieve. Many of today’s top
printmakers use collagraph extensively in their work.
These workshops are aimed at adults and are suitable for artists and
non-artists alike. You do not need previous printmaking experience. The
workshops will also appeal to people who want to refresh a rusty knowledge of
intaglio printmaking or simply develop existing skills. By the end of each
workshop participants will have had hands-on experience of using an etching
press safely and will have made and printed their own prints.
Participants will get most benefit by attending all three sessions. This is
strongly recommended for anyone who hopes eventually to become a regular user of
the Sidney Nolan Trust's print studio. But newcomers who simply want to have a
go at printmaking are welcome at any of these workshops.
Course fees:£98 for all three days, or £38 for one day , £70 for two days.
Advance booking is essential, the earlier the better.
The Course fees are payable on booking please. Cheques payable to

Steamroller Prints 17-21 August 2011
We will be making very large relief prints, using a steamroller. We'll
print them as a
"performance art" event,
with the public encouraged
to attend and take part in workshops to make their own "foot-squares"
plates. This five-day event will build on the huge success of our 2009
event - click here to see a picture
gallery from 2009. Participants at the previous steamroller event
came from far and wide. We will give an equally warm welcome to both
newcomers to The Rodd and our existing members. Click here
for
the artist's brief.
Participating printmakers can click
here for a report on the 2-3 July preparatory weekend and to see the action
now required from them.
We borrowed the name "steamroller prints" from an
annual event sponsored by the San Francisco Centre for the Book. We
are
grateful for their consent.
