"Julia" - a solar plate print by Mike Clements
My image manipulation software (Photoshop) has an "Image>invert" command. This allowed me to create a positive "posterised" image and then invert it to a negative for output on to an inkjet transparency. This was then exposed on to Nyloprint WS94 for 15 minutes on a bright, sunny Winter's day. By extending wash-out to 10 minutes, I was able to clear the polymer layer right down to the metal backing, giving a relief depth of 0.68mm. On a detailed relief print with no large open areas, this might be sufficient relief depth. But on this plate, with its large open areas, even my hardest roller tended to deposit ink smears on the lower surfaces. These smeared lower areas on the inked plate then had to be carefully wiped clean before printing. I printed the plate on an etching press with mount card "spacers" either side of the plate, to keep press pressure relatively low and thus avoid any "slip" between plate and paper as they reached the top roller.
