"Jackdaws Feeding" - a solar plate print by Gordon Yapp
Single exposure intaglio solar plate, printed using black Akua Intaglio water-based ink. Gordon drew the image on cartridge paper using a Rotring pen. He than photocopied it on to a suitable OHP film and exposed the plate for 10 minutes in a light box. Gordon's light box is still under development. It is an amended version of the design in Diane Longley's book "Printmaking with Photopolymer Plates" (Illumination press, Adelaide 1998 ISBN 0 646 27392 2).
The bright area behind the feeder could be caused by the UV bulb in Gordon's light box casting uneven UV light on the plate. Further experience and research may help to clarify and eliminate any such problems. The small spots towards the corners of the plate are due to applying insufficient talc to the film and plate before exposure, with the result that the film stuck slightly to the plate during exposure in the light box. Both these could be described as technical flaws but, in practice, they add a feeling of intense movement and action to the image. |
